Changes.

Long time no talk, huh?  If I still have any followers out there, thank you for your patience!

I have to admit, I have desperately missed blogging.  I definitely needed the break, but I just miss that dialogue – that solo time phrasing and rephrasing my thoughts to share with you all.  There is a lot going on in my life right now, and I felt that I needed to take a step back and just focus on life outside the blog.  That being said, I am now ready to make an effort to get back into blogging.  I do not plan to write every day (or every other day), but I am going to try to pop in at least once a week.  For now.  Hopefully I can work my way back into daily musings!

Speaking of…the last time I snuck in a blog post was February 15 – On the Run: Houston Part II (see 3rd line below…)  Since then, a lot has happened!

My 2-YEAR Blogiversary!!!  Which is sort of funny, because at the time, I used me “consistently” blogging as an excuse to register my own domain (daydreamsandshoestrings.com)!  Then I went and hid!

I turned the big 3-0.  Oh yes.  And so did the hubby…a mere 5 days after me.  He affectionately calls me a  *cough*  Cougar.  Haha.  This year we decided to host our very first Crawfish Boil and invited a few close friends to celebrate with us!

I am working – a LOT.  Also, traveling a lot – at least one week a month.  Houston has become my home away from home.  On the plus side - I’m racking up my frequent flier miles and hotel bonus points!!!

I took my first Bar Method class!  Ah-maz-ing!  I will soon write a whole blog post on my experience, but this class is a perfect complement for a runner – complete with strength training and stretching!

I did my first big destination race – the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run in Washington, D.C.  Ever since I did an internship there my senior year of college, I have desperately been looking for an excuse to return!  And what better way to merge my love for the city with my love for running?!  Another full blog post coming soon!

I followed the Boston Marathon bombings and every.single.program following until the capture of suspect #2.  And then I watched some more.  I was incredibly saddened.  But I was also incredibly enlightened by the small acts of kindness and compassion that strangers showed one other.

My grandpa passed away.

I went to my first “Zoo-To-Do” – New Orleans’ premiere fundraising event for Audubon Zoo.  I got to wear a fancy dress and got the hubby into a suit.  Please ignore the awesome neon yellow wristband…our work gave us VIP tickets!  I even got to meet Peyton Manning…even though he wouldn’t take pictures with all of us!

And finally, I have been keeping up with running and working out.  Another post coming soon…about me chasing down that sub-2 hour half marathon!

Down & Out…But Now I’m Back!

Hello friends…it’s been a while!  It’s already been 6 weeks into the new year…and I have honestly never been busier in my life!  Besides travel, work, travel, life, work – I just recently recovered from nasty cold.   So, now that I have gained a lil’ bit of time back to have a REAL life, I will catch you up!

Snippets of my 2013:

We had a VERY WHITE Christmas!!!  We arrived back to Louisiana after a 2-week Christmas vacation in West Virginia!  I had a couple extra vacation days to round out my year…so I ended up with another week off work - Woo-hoo!

I had my first Bar Method class!  Sorry folks…by Bar Method I do NOT mean how to score free drinks at the bar!  I do, however, mean one of the best sculpting/leaning/stretching workouts I’ve ever done in my life!  Detailed post to come soon.

I spent a full Saturday in New Orleans with the bestie…we ditched the scheduled 9K run due to severe stormy weather…but had an awesome day date instead!  We decided to try out a local “All-Day Breakfast” joint called Fat Hen Grocery on St. Charles Avenue.  We both ordered the Giant Pancake smothered in blueberries and pecans…and it was heavenly! Post HERE.

I traveled to Houston for work – again.  Highlights: New running locations found!  House of Blues – VIP Style with The Captain Legendary Band!  Detailed posts to come soon!

I attended January’s “Restaurant Club” masquerading as a “Book Club” dinner at Bosco’s Italian Cafe in Mandeville.  Delish!  Best meals of the night: Baked Tortellini & Lasagna.

New running resolution this year is to maintain a good running base – sign up for a few half marathons – and finish the year with 750 miles!  January:  I ran just over 50 miles!  I didn’t quite reach my goal of 62 miles due to afore-mentioned nasty cold…but I was close!

And last but not least…enter February…and…MARDI GRAS!!!

2012 Jazz Half Marathon!

On Oct. 27th, I ran my third half marathon!  And now, I can claim a new PR!  My journey is below…

I woke up at 4:30 am on Saturday morning, grabbed a Luna bar, drank some water, and got dressed for the race.  Due to the cold front that moved in the day before, it was to be absolutely FREEZING for south Louisiana (in the low 50′s), cloudy, and windy!  But I was determined to still run in my shorts and tank top!

I drove over to Jenna’s house (my best friend from high school) so that her husband could drop us off at the start.  If you remember, this was to be Jenna’s FIRST half marathon experience!  She was strong in her training and we completed a 12-mile run the weekend before the race.  We were confident that we could finish this race together.  Once we arrived t Lafayette Square, we noticed that the streets weren’t too crowded, and the bathroom lines weren’t too long!  It was going to be a good day!  After a light jog around the park to warm-up, we wound our way to the start.  Look at us…we were READY to CRUSH this course!

I felt really good starting off, and was super glad to have a running buddy.  You see, I have this very common runners condition where I…start off too fast!  *Sigh*  But this time around, we promised each other that we would keep steady in the beginning so that we could finish strong.

The course started by Lafayette Square, led us down Poydras to Convention Center Blvd and back, a brief stint on Loyola past the Superdome, around the corner and down the street to Lee Circle, and then all the way down St. Charles street to the entrance of Audubon Park.  Once there, we looped around the park, went all the way back up St. Charles Avenue to Lee Circle, then finished down Camp street at Lafayette Square.

Around mile 5.5, we started to hear cheering from all the runners.  It was then that we saw the first runner coming back the other way!  AMAZINGLY FAST!!  We kept up a pretty strong, consistent pace, only grazing by the water stops every 2 miles to grab some water.

My photo journey along the course:  Through Audubon Park…

…and then flying past Lee Circle to hit mile 13 with everything I had left!

And I was still smiling like a fool crossing that finish line…
I got my medal and funneled out to the after party area.

How did I fare compared to the goals I set for this race? Goals posted HERE.  Well, I didn’t quite reach my 2-hour mark…but I did get a 2.5 minute PR!  Weird right…2.5 minute PR from race #1 to race #2…and here I go doing it again…

Mile 1: 9:24
Mile 2: 9:08
Mile 3: 9:02
Mile 4: 9:01
Mile 5: 9:18
Mile 6: 9:14
Mile 7: 9:28
Mile 8: 9:12
Mile 9: 9:15
Mile 10: 9:24
Mile 11: 9:12
Mile 12: 9:28
Mile 13: 9:22
Total Time: 2:02:39   New PR!!!

Overall, I felt great about the race, knowing I gave it almost as much as I could have.  And to be honest, I just signed up for another half in mid-December because my finish time proved to me that I have it in me to reach my 2-hour time goal next time!

Half #3 is in the books!

A huge thanks to my hubby who supported me every day, and also to all of you who have helped me along my journey.  I am feeling strong and determined, and I can’t wait to see what my last race of the year has in store for me!
